Since 2019, the Newport Beach Police Foundation has raised money for a wide range of items and programs that fall outside the city budget. From police safety equipment and family support to scholarships and specialized units, every dollar goes directly toward strengthening the NBPD and the community it serves.
In partnership with the Newport Beach Police Association, the NBPF provides college scholarships to children of NBPD officers upon graduating from high school. These awards recognize the sacrifices made by the entire family when a parent serves in law enforcement.
The NBPD Mounted Unit is part of the Orange County Regional Mounted Enforcement Unit, a multi-agency partnership with approximately 40 horses. Newport Beach officers serve in the unit as an ancillary duty alongside their regular assignments in Patrol, Traffic, or Detective Divisions.
Mounted officers provide enhanced visibility for crowd management, patrols, special events, and parades. Horses can navigate terrain that vehicles cannot, including sand, stairs, and the city's piers, giving officers a tactical advantage and a unique opportunity to connect with the public.
The NBPD Canine Unit currently consists of two officer-and-dog teams: Officer Eric Rosenberg with K-9 Ryder (a Belgian Malinois) and Officer Joe De Julio with K-9 Goose (a Slovak Malinois and the department's first female K-9).
These teams are trained and annually certified through California POST in handler protection, suspect apprehension, building and area searches, evidence recovery, tracking in urban and rural environments, and narcotics detection. They also conduct public relations demonstrations throughout the community.
Foundation support helps cover the cost of veterinary care, specialized training, equipment, and the day-to-day needs of these working dogs so they can continue protecting Newport Beach alongside their handlers.
Beyond these highlighted programs, the Foundation funds a range of needs that fall outside the city budget, including:
Funding critical police safety equipment not covered by the city budget.
Providing assistance to families of fallen and injured officers.
Supporting community holiday events that build trust between officers and residents.
Caring for therapy and comfort animals that aid officers and community members.
